Overview
Wheezing is a highâpitched, musical sound that occurs during breathing, most often when exhaling. In the context of asthma, the sound results from narrowed or inflamed airways that restrict airflow. Asthma affects roughly 262 million people worldwide and is the most common chronic respiratory disease in children and adults alike (World Health Organization, 2022). Wheezing is the hallmark audible clue that a personâs airways are reacting to a trigger, and it can range from occasional âchirpsâ during an attack to a constant, lowâgrade whine heard even at rest.
