Overview
Zearalenone mycotoxicosis is a foodâborne illness caused by exposure to the mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEA). ZEA is produced by several Fusarium species (most commonly Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium culmorum) that infect cereal grains such as corn, wheat, barley, rye, and sorghum. When contaminated grains are consumed, the toxin is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and exerts estrogenâlike (xenoâestrogenic) effects on the body.
The condition is most common in regions where climate conditions favor Fusarium growthâtemperate and subtropical zones with high humidity during the grainâgrowing season.
