What is Petichial Rash?
A petechial rash is a collection of tiny, pinpointâsize (<âŻ1âŻmm) red, purple, or brown spots that appear on the skin or mucous membranes. These spots, called petechiae, result from small blood vessels (capillaries) that have ruptured and leaked blood into the skin. Unlike bruises, petechiae do not blanch (turn white) when pressed, and they usually do not cause itching or pain.
Petechiae can appear anywhere on the body, but they are most commonly seen on the arms, legs, torso, and the inside of the mouth. Because they can be a sign of a wide range of conditionsâfrom harmless minor trauma to lifeâthreatening infectionsârecognizing their cause is essential.
