What is Vein Inflammation?
Vein inflammation, medically termed phlebitis, occurs when a vein becomes irritated or swollen, often accompanied by blood clot formation. It exists in two primary forms:
- Superficial phlebitis: Affects veins near the skin surface, typically less dangerous.
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Involves deeper limb veins, carrying risk for pulmonary embolism.
According to the CDC, DVT affects up to 900,000 Americans annually, with 1 in 4 cases proving fatal without prompt treatment.
Common Causes
- Catheter use (IV lines or PICC lines)
- Trauma/injury to veins
- Varicose veins (enlarged, weakened veins)
- Prolonged immobility (long travel or bed rest)
- Blood clotting disorders (Factor V Leiden)
- Cancer (especially pancreatic/lung)
- Smoking
- Estrogen therapy (hormone replacement/birth control)
- Obesity
- Infection (bacterial or fungal)
Associated Symptoms
- Localized tenderness along vein path
- Skin redness (erythema) and warmth
