What is Ventriculomegaly?
Ventriculomegaly is a medical term that describes an abnormal enlargement of the ventricles â the fluidâfilled cavities within the brain that contain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In healthy individuals the ventricles are just large enough to allow CSF to circulate and cushion the brain. When they become dilated, the condition may reflect an underlying problem with CSF production, flow, or absorption.
The term is most often used in prenatal and pediatric imaging, but it can apply to adults as well. Ventriculomegaly is not a disease itself; it is a **sign** that warrants further investigation to determine the cause and the need for treatment.

When to See a Doctor
Ventriculomegaly may be discovered incidentally on imaging, but certain warning signs require prompt medical evaluation:
- Persistent or worsening headache that does not respond to overâtheâcounter pain relievers.
