What is Projected eye strain?
Projected eye strain, often referred to as visual fatigue or asthenopia, is a set of uncomfortable sensations that arise when the eyes are asked to focus for prolonged periods, especially on tasks that require nearâvision or rapid visual changes. The term âprojectedâ is used by optometrists to describe strain that results from looking at a specific visual target (e.g., a computer screen, smartphone, or a printed page) for an extended time. The condition is usually benign, but when it becomes chronic it can affect productivity, sleep quality, and overall wellâbeing.
